Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak attends historic signing of the Laken Riley Act at the White House

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND) joined President Donald J. Trump at the White House today for the signing of the Laken Riley Act, the first bill President Trump has signed into law during his presidency. This landmark legislation, which received bipartisan support in both the House and Senate, underscores a unified commitment to securing the border and enhancing community safety across the nation. 

“It was an honor to be part of this somber event as President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law. Having your child’s name memorialized in legislation like this is every parent’s worst nightmare. It should not have happened,” Fedorchak said. “The Trump administration and Congress are serious about keeping our communities safe and fulfilling the promises we made to the American people. The safety of our country isn’t a partisan issue, and the enactment of the Laken Riley Act proves that we can find common ground to tackle the challenges we face.” 

The Laken Riley Act will require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal aliens who commit theft, burglary, larceny, or shoplifting offenses, assault of a law enforcement officer, or any crime resulting in death or serious bodily injury, so they cannot reoffend and commit further crimes.  

“Laken’s tragic death at the hands of an illegal immigrant—who should never have been allowed to remain in our country—is a stark reminder of what happens when our immigration laws are ignored, and enforcement is undermined. This legislation is a necessary step to restore safety and justice, and I commend President Trump for swiftly signing it into law,” Fedorchak continued. 

President Trump’s signing of the Laken Riley Act marks a major step in delivering on his campaign promise to secure our borders and make America safe again.
