Seventy years ago, a bold vision took root on the plains just north of Minot—a vision of strength, deterrence, and commitment to America’s national security. On July 12, 1955, the groundbreaking of Minot Air Force Base marked the beginning of a mission that would come to define our region’s deep connection to service, sacrifice, and standing up for freedom.
Today, we live in uncertain times. The world is growing more complex, threats are evolving, and the challenges we face aren’t going away. Thankfully, Minot Air Force Base remains one of the most strategically significant military installations in the country—providing necessary deterrence, intelligence, and early warning action against foreign threats. It’s a place where dedication meets innovation—home to both the 5th Bomb Wing and the 91st Missile Wing. Minot plays a critical role in our nation’s nuclear triad, and most importantly, in maintaining peace through strength.
The power of our nation’s force begins with its people, and North Dakota is proud to be a defense state. The cold doesn’t scare us. It makes us tougher and more resilient. No one knows that better than the men and women at Minot Air Force Base, whose motto, “Only the Best Come North,” rings true in every mission they carry out. From the Cold War to today’s global threats, Minot Air Force Base has stood as a constant—always vigilant, always ready.
The airmen and women stationed here represent the best of us. Their courage, discipline, and readiness are matched only by the strength and support of the surrounding communities who have welcomed generations of service members with open arms.
As we celebrate this milestone, we honor not only the groundbreaking that built the base—but also the legacy of excellence that has followed. Minot Air Force Base has always been a source of pride for our great state. The base provides tremendous economic benefits—supporting thousands of jobs, stimulating local business growth, and generating significant economic activity that enhances the quality of life in our communities.
This level of excellence doesn’t just happen. It takes resources, planning, true leadership, strong recruiting, and ongoing funding. Today, we also look ahead to the future, with ongoing investments to modernize our nuclear forces and strengthen America’s deterrent posture.
Thank you to the airmen and women, veterans, and families—past and present—who have made Minot Air Force Base what it is today. North Dakota and the nation are grateful for your service.
Here’s to 70 years of excellence—and for many more to come.
