Fedorchak issues Request for Information to address AI’s growing energy demands

March 10, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND) today announced the next step in the AI and Energy Working Group’s efforts to develop a legislative framework for powering the future of artificial intelligence (AI). The Working Group is issuing a Request for Information (RFI) to gather input from stakeholders on the energy demands of AI and policy solutions to ensure reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy access.

"To be AI dominant, we must first be energy dominant. In 2024, data centers accounted for 4.3% of total U.S. power demand, and analysts predict this could climb to as much as 12% by 2030—more electricity than the entire state of Texas uses today. Yet, the U.S. isn't scaling up reliable baseload power quickly enough to support this rapid growth,” Fedorchak said. “My goal is to bring in experts and stakeholders, legislators, and other interested parties to craft a legislative framework that secures our energy dominance, strengthens our electric grid, and positions America as the global leader in AI. Meeting the energy demands of AI isn’t just about powering technology—it's about powering America’s future. I look forward to working with a broad range of voices to achieve these goals.”

The RFI seeks input on three primary pillars:

  1. American Energy Dominance and AI Energy Demands – Strategies to secure reliable, affordable, and sustainable domestic energy supply to power AI infrastructure.

  1. Securing the Energy Grid – Policies to modernize the grid to meet increased demand in a reliable and affordable manner while protecting the grid against cyber and physical threats.

  1. Strategic Competition: Outpacing China – Ensuring American leadership in AI and energy innovation amid global competition.

CLICK HERE to view the RFI. Stakeholders are invited to submit written responses as a Word document not exceeding 3,500 words by May 15, 2025. Submissions should be emailed to FedorchakRFI@mail.house.gov

The Working Group will use these insights to shape legislative recommendations that strengthen America’s energy infrastructure while maintaining global leadership in AI development.
